Over a 35 year career with the  United States Agency for International Development (USAID), I found myself in a variety 

of dangerous situations that required diplomacy and commitment to principles that protected not only me but members of the Foreign Service around the world.  These slides, first presented at the Foreign Affairs Counter Threat (FACT) Course via the Foreign Service Institute provided an overview of my experiences and the lessons I learned in each of them for staying safe and ultimately surviving the situation.
