From 2016 to 2020, I served as a Deputy Chief of Mission role player for the Foreign Service Institute participation in diplomatic security training for chief of mission personnel.  The objective of the training was to help foreign service officers understand the importance of diplomacy as one of the tools needed to enhance security for personnel overseas.  We differentiated between the normal diplomatic duties of an FSO and the everyday interaction with locals both inside the embassy in the general population.  A friend in a dangerous place can save your life and the lives of your colleagues.  Developing and nuturing relationships, at every level, should be the goal of every chief of mission personnel.
